Here You Come Again

Opening Night verdict ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Set during the first Covid lockdown, 40 something Kevin is down on his luck, work sucks and to top it all off he’s just been dumped. Seeking refuge in the attic of his childhood home, Kevin soon realises quarantining can be a lonely business, especially when you’ve only got your old Dolly Parton records and posters for company.

Fortunately for Kevin, Dolly quickly makes her presence felt, think Mary Poppins but with more sass, bigger boobs and a whole lot of sparkle. Through Dolly, Kevin gradually begins to remember just how wonderful and varied life can be, as he finds the courage within to pick himself up, dust himself off and transform his life for good. It reflects on the madness of the pandemic while demonstrating that we all have the ability to expand our own personal horizons even while stuck in our parents’ attic.

Written by multi-Emmy award-winning comedy and songwriter Bruce Vilanch with Gabriel Barre (who also directs) and writer/actor Tricia Paoluccio (who co-writes and stars as Dolly), Here You Come Again has already enjoyed successful runs in the US, ahead of embarking on this current UK tour the creatives called on much-loved writer Jonathan Harvey who added additional material for UK audiences. The result is a joyful, feel-good, heartwarming musical that will delight theatregoers for years to come.

Steven Webb is tremendous as Kevin, he bursts with loveable energy endearing him to audiences immediately. While incredibly funny Webb also skilfully taps (quite literally) into Kevin’s vulnerabilities which adds depth and relatability to this beautiful story. Sharing the stage with Webb is Tricia Paoluccio as Dolly, she absolutely shines in the role, her characterisation of Parton is perfection. She has real star quality and gives an unforgettable performance. The relationship between Webb and Paoluccio is what really anchors this show, cementing it as a wholesome, heartfelt production. They bounce of each other brilliantly, keeping you guessing as to what’s to come while skilfully engaging the audience with their animated performances.

Joining Webb and Paoluccio on stage are Charlotte Elizabeth Yorke and Aiden Cutler. Both brilliantly bring multiple characters in Kevin’s world to life adding further heart and humour to proceedings. They also add gorgeous backing vocals which in turn further lifts the energy of this joyous production. Special mention must also go to the onstage band made up of Luke Adams, Ben Scott and Kevin Oliver Jones who frequently become part of the scenes with great effect.

Paul Wills’ set design is intricate and effective, transporting the rest of us forty somethings in the audience to a place of sentimentality as the attic plays host to artefacts from our childhoods, a Bluebird Toys Big Yellow Teapot, a creepy Chucky doll and of course a box of discarded tangled tinsel.

This show is all about fun and ensures that’s exactly what the audience experience, the cast cleverly acknowledge that there may be Dolly fans in the audience bursting to sing along and that opportunity is given while being gently controlled by the cast, so it remains within the predetermined moments.

The placement of Dolly’s songs has clearly been done with great care. The lesser known are given their moment in the spotlight while the big hitters like 9 To 5 arrive just when you want them to.

Here You Come Again while set during the pandemic is anything but heavy, it’s uplifting, hopeful and sparkles with joy. A reminder to us all to: ‘Stop looking in mirrors and start looking out of the window.’

9 to 5 The Musical

Back in 1980, the film 9 to 5, was released, it starred Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin and Dolly Parton and was a huge box office success. It still often makes the top 100 list of funniest films of all time. In addition, it took Parton from being a hugely popular singer to the global superstar and cultural icon that she is today.

On the basis of crowd reaction tonight, there is a great deal of affection for the film and that has rubbed off onto 9 to 5: The Musical, as throughout tonight’s performance many audience members could be heard uttering the next line before it was delivered, and those that didn’t still lapped up this fun and at times outrageous show!

Adapted for the stage by its original screenwriter Patricia Resnick, the plot remains true to the original as three secretaries extract revenge on their sexist, bigot of a boss, Frank Hart Jnr. Opening with narration from Dolly herself, via a video message we are introduced to Violet Newstead (Claire Sweeny), a widowed single mum, who runs the office in everything but pay grade and title. Then there is Doralee Rhodes (Stephanie Chandos), a happily married secretary to Hart Jnr, who he constantly sexually harasses.  Finally, Judy Bernly (Vivian Panka) is a timid young woman starting her first job after separating from her husband.

Following a series of injustices inflicted on all three women by Hart Jnr (Sean Needham) the ladies set out to not just extract revenge on the ‘boss from hell’ but also change the culture of the office and parity with their male counterparts plus better working conditions for all employees.

This is a fun romp that judging from tonight’s audience will go down a storm for its run at the Palace. Chandos does a great job of bringing “Dolly” to life with her turn as Doralee, full of sass and charm. Sweeney is equally good as Violet, the focal point of the production, her comic timing and fantastic voice highlight why she continues to have such a notable career in musical theatre. Making up the tremendous trio is UK stage debutant Panka who brings the house down with her rousing and powerful rendition of ‘Get Out and Stay Out’.

For me the highlight of the night belonged to Needham as the vile boss. His comic timing was bang on point, although his accent slipped at times it didn’t matter he was brilliant throughout even making the loathsome Hart Jnr, likeable.  His rendition of ‘Here for You’, was as hilarious as it was grotesque.

I would like to give special mention to Julia J Nagle, as Roz, whose unrequited love for the boss is a subplot that runs throughout, who very nearly steals the show, with the ridiculous ‘Heart to Hart’. Nagle, like the rest of the ensemble cast, are solid throughout.

9 to 5 The Musical is a fun show that provides much-needed escapism for 2 ½ hours, so what you are waiting for? Dig out your hairspray and your shoulder padded suit, for an office party like no other!

As Dolly Parton bursts onto a screen introducing us to the musical adaptation of the hit 80’s movie she starred in it’s clear that this Manchester audience is up for fun and lots of it, lucky for them that’s exactly what this new touring production delivers.

As a song 9 to 5 has gained a life of its own, no party is complete without a blast of it so it comes as no surprise that the film in which it originated would be given the musical treatment. Writer Patricia Resnick along with music and lyric writer Dolly Parton prove that 9 to 5 the musical is much more than one killer song, it’s witty, cheeky and isn’t afraid to tackle important themes in its own unique and hugely entertaining style.

Our three leads Violet (Louise Redknapp), Judy (Amber Davies) and Doralee (Georgina Castle) are living in a hideously sexist world, there’s gender politics, not a hope of equal pay not to mention their overbearing, oversexed boss Mr Hart (Sean Needham). Continually overlooked for and undermined by most of their male colleagues the trio soon realise that it’s time for these sassy sisters to start doing it for themselves resulting in a comical revenge plot which will hopefully lead them to the illusive equality they so richly deserve.

Louise Redknapp is perfectly cast as Violet, strong and assured she has a commanding presence on stage, Georgina Castle captures Doralee’s genuine likeability to perfection while Love Island winner Amber Davies absolutely shines on stage; her delivery of Get Out and Stay Out brings the house down, quickly silencing any casting sceptics. The three each bring something uniquely special to the stage while their harmonies are heavenly.

The subplot about spinster Roz although delivered to great comedic effect by Lucinda Lawrence seems a little at odds with the rest of the fabulous female empowerment playing out on stage nevertheless the audience lap up her show-stealing number and she receives some of the biggest laughs of the night.

With slick staging and costume design from Tom Rogers as well as vibrant ensemble choreography from Lisa Stevens 9 to 5 has the audience toe-tapping from the start. Add to this superb performances, lots of laughs and a timely uplifting tale you’d be mad not to tumble out of bed and head to Manchester’s Palace Theatre to catch this Dolly good show! Fabulous, feel-good fun.
